HOW DID I LEARN PHOTOSHOP

Fri Nov 2, 2007, 2:41 AM
I have always dreamt of working for a magazine. It has always been my goal. I took up Mass Communication because it’s the field most related to my dream job. I don’t have the slightest idea what I should learn then, all I know is someday, I’ll create those pages of the magazine I used to browse.

I was disheartened when I learned to use the syllabus and found out that neither photography nor editing is part of the curriculum. The Mass Communication course in my university is generalized – the thing is they focused more on Theater Arts, Journalism, Radio and Television Broadcasting. I did enjoy these majors though. Yet that did not hinder my inclination to fashion, visual arts, photography and layout.

I wasn’t born rich and I don’t have my own computer or the tools for the trade. I learned that in order to pursue my dream career, I have to be competent and learn at least the basics – and that I would have to master my ingenuity too.

I bought my own PC on my first job. I had the luxury of owning my own digital camera on my second and current work, where I also obtain extra fund and time to finally support my career of choice. I learned photography by observing a friend who is very good at it. Besides, I have a passion for photos and am a camwhore myself. And so my love for pictures ignites my obsession to make each photos magazine-cover worth. Adobe Photoshop is the best tool to make it possible.

I am very proud to say that I learned Photoshop by myself. I bought a simple book by local authors and studied the basics. I install the software on my pc and with the aid of some online tutorials; I did not stop until I was able to create works that amazed me. It became an addiction. It came to a point when I no longer sleep or eat to finish some new tutorials I got online. It was all worth it though. It’s the satisfaction you get in doing something that you really really like.

Portrait Photography has been my favorite. I like making magazine covers out of my stock photos. I also like editing pictures of beautiful places I had been and putting caption as if promoting them. Soon I had friends asking me to make magazine covers for them or layout their photos or their relatives to be given as a gift.

I then realized how much I wanted to pursue that passion that I am willing to give up my well-considerably lucrative post.
